Title IX
What is Title IX?
- The US Department of Education revealed revised Title IX rules on 4/19 that will be enacted this fall
- Title IX is a civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools
- The new rules add gender-identity, protecting transgender students, to the protections
- This means schools not respecting pronouns of trans & nonbinary students or forcing them to use restrooms not aligning with their identity may be committing federal civil rights violations once these new rules are enacted in the fall
- The new rules leave out protections for trans athletes that had been discussed previously
- Unfortunately, these new rules faced challenges leading to their blocking in the court, first by a Texas court and then by the Supreme Court
